Several genealogies report his middle name as Drury, consistent with several reports, but limited documentation, that his grandfather was named Drury Christian.

In the Civil War, he served in Comapany B of the 9th Tesxas Cavalry. His military report, inconnection with his wife's application for a military widow's pension, reports he deserted his unit in February 1863.
