Notes

  • Rosalie's name varies in spelling, appearing as Rosley 1900, Rosly in 1910, Rossly in 1920..  The original name may have been Rosalee or Rosalie.  On her death certificate and gravestone, Rosalie's name is spelled Rossie (for Rosie?).  Her son Weldon reported her name as Rossy on his WWI registration.

Rossy's date of death according to her death certificate and gravestone is 30 December 1929.  The date on her stone is 3 December, the date of death on her husband Drayton's death certificate.  Drayton is buried with her in Little Memorial Cemetery in Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina.

But the death date for Drayton is reported as 30 December, 1929, which is his wife's date of death!   Drayton's death certificate reports he died on 3 December 1929, but his grave has Rosie's date of death!

The grave markers for Drayton and his wife are footstones in the same style.  It appears they were both cut at the same time, which makes sense since they died in the same month.  But the dates of death for the two on their death certificates got switched on their gravestones by the engravers!

    -----------------
"My grandmother Lillie Florence Jenkins is not mentioned ever living with Drayton and Rosalie that I can find.  She is in early census records living with her sister Mala and her husband.  You are correct on the death dates being switched on Drayton and Rosalie.  Drayton had a heart attack and was found dead in some woods near his home.

They are buried at Little Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Gaffney, SC.  And are directly next to my grandparents. Joseph Graham Northey and Lillie Florence Jenkins Northey. ... Drayton and Rosalie lived in Blacksburg at the time of their deaths. ...

I never met either of my great-grandparents or my grandmother Lillie.  She died when my mom was 8.  If you ever find anything about Rosalie, please let me know.  She is just a total mystery.  (She was a Harris before she married Drayton Jenkins.)

"I am confused about Lillie’s [Lillie Florence Jenkins] parents and hope someday to figure it out.  Can’t figure out why she seemed to have been raised by her older sister unless that sister was her mother. ... As far as I have been able to determine, the Jenkins and Harris families were all from the area of Rutherford County NC.  That is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I found one will where a Jenkins (might have been a Harris) left a son his still and wine press so I guess they were mountainmen moonshiners!"
