Notes

  • Georgia, Compiled Marriages, 1754-1850
    Augustus A [H] Jones
    Spouse Ann R Randle
Marriage 8 Oct 1839 Jackson County, Georgia

The 1850 census, which reports what appears to be the wife of Augustus H Jones as Ann Randle, age 26, or born about 1824.  That means they would have married when she was only about 15!

The really interesting Texas Jones descendants of Russell Sr. came down through Russell Jr., who married Sophia Harris and died suddenly of illness in San Felipe, Texas, in 1841. His son Augustus Harris [Jones], who arrived in Mexican Texas in 1835, escaped death at Goliad and the Alamo because he was off in the States raising money on Fannin's behalf for the Texian cause. Gus Jr., a cowman turn-of-the-century mayor of San Antonio, joined two other cattlemen to build the Saint Anthony, still a luxury hotel there. William Early Jones, a jurist who was hauled off to Mexico City in 1842 by General Woll while holding a commissioners court in San Antonio, became first editor of the San Antonio Express after distinguishing himself as an editor in Augusta, Georgia.

    --------------------------
Augustus Harris Jones came to Texas with his father and brothers, with a group called The Georgia Volunteers. Augustus was a personal friend of Col. James Fannin of the Texas Army. Augustus enlisted in the Matagorda volunteers on October 1, 1835, and he accompanied Mag [Major?] Ira Westover in the Lipantitllan Expedition October 30, 1835. He fought in the first battle of Goliad at Colita Creek with Fannin.

Later Augustus went to San Antonio and was in the seige of Bexar, December 1835 where Ben Milam was killed. Then Col. Fannin sent Agustus to the United States to raise funds and enlist men for the Texas forces, and was in the United States when the Alamo fell.

Augustus became Brig. General in the Texas Militia, and fought with Zachary Taylor in the war with Mexico, 1846/1848. He was a congressman in the house of the 9th congress in 1844/1845.

Augustus' widowed mother is in his household and two doors away is his brother Russell.  The age of the oldest chidl, William, would put his birth a couple of years after his parents married.

Next door on the other side is another brother, reported here as I G Jones, Isham Green Jones.

Another researcher has a photo and story of he family burial place around a big tree on their Texas land.

    ------------------------------
    China Grove Cemetery est. 1843

Seven members of the Jones family and German immigrant Heinrich Monken are interred here. After participating in the Texas Revolution in 1836, Augustus Harris Jones migrated his family from Georgia to establish plantations and peach orchards at this site. Although Augustus was buried here amongst his loved ones upon his death in 1877, his third wife had his remains moved to the IOOF Cemetery in Gonzales at a later date. Buried here is Augustus’ mother Sophia Harris 1793-1852, his first wife Ann Roseanna Randle 1824-1851, their daughters Laura 1843-1844 and Emily 1845-1845, their sons Augustus Harris, Jr 1850-1852 and Isham Green 1824-1867, Augustus’ second wife Julia Hatchett 1833-1854 and German immigrant Heinrich Monken d 1846.
