I note that sources spell Mary Ann's surname, and also for her father, as Pomfret. The spelling of her son's name is normally John Pomfert Butler. Perhaps the parent changed the spelling, or John himself later changed it, or through general transmission the spelling has been changed.

However, I also note that the middle name of one of Mary Ann's daughters is also this family name, and is spelled as Mary Ann's and her father's, Mary Pomfret Butler. Several sources exhibit this difference of spelling of the middle names of these two children.
