  A Social Security record seems to represent Mattie, and has the correct parents and place of birth.  But the birth date here is 6 years earlier than the date reported by the 1900 census.  The odd thing is that the primary name had been changed to J P Bradshaw in 1962.  There is no indication what the J P might be.  No original document was available with this index record.

  A will in Hamblen County Tennessee sheds some light on the appearance of the extraneous name J P Bradshaw in Mattie Katherine's SS record here.  This will identifies John P Bradshaw's wife as Mattie Katherine Gregory.  It appears that either Social Security or the Ancestry.com Index has listed incompletely the facts in the file.  This may be the file for her husband, and the index has erroneously placed her name in the position and form of an alternate name for the primary name, when it intends to name her as the spouse.  It may indicate that her name was added on to his account.  A voter list of male voters in Jefferson County, Tennessee includes the name J P Bradshaw in 1891.
