Notes

  • Margaret Overby is reported by some genealogies as the wife of Richard Gregory of King William County, Virginia, who moved to Washington County, Kentucky.  This Richard is generally named Richard West Gregory in genealogies, but no documentation of this middle name has been found.  His middle initial is reported in some sources as W, and the name West has only been inferred from his supposed mother's Maiden name of West.  But a highly researched and documented source published on the Gregorys in 1927 reports Richard and West as two brothers, whose mother was Agnes West.

Some genealogies report Margaret Overby as the second wife of Richard W Gregory, the first being Nancy Ann Vaughan.  Some trees, some with good research documentation, report Nancy Ann Vaughan as the only wife.  So two families may be combined here.  Richard W Gregory is the only Gregory from King William, Virginia, as far as I know, who is reported to have moved from there to Kentucky.  Other Gregorys we know there are from the line of Isaac Gregory of Pennsylvania, and his son Benjamin of Pennsylvania and Prince William County, northeastern Virginia.

The case of the wives is further complicated by the will that seems to be for this Richard Gregory, which names his wife Ann.  Maybe Margret Overby's full name was Margaret Ann, but I have seen no record to that effect.  But then Nancy Vaughan is always reported as Nancy Ann Vaughan, and some trees associated the Ann of the wil with Nancy Ann Vaughan.

Richard W Gregory is reported to have died in 1817, and his wife Nancy Ann Vaughan in 1821.  Given these other reports and death dates, Margaret Overby must have been Richard's first wife.  The will of Richard Gregory of Washington County, Kentucky, in 1812 (probated 1817) refers to his wife as Ann, matching Nancy Ann Vaughan, consistent with the dates of death as reported in the above tree.  Some children's names mentioned in Richard's will are not among those reported as children of Richard and Nancy, so these may be the children of Margaret Overby.

A marriage index record reports the marriage of Richard W West to Nancy Ann Vaughan in 1759 in Kentucky.  Some versons of this marriage record, with no marriage date in some cases, reports the marriage occurred in Virginia.  This would be beacuse Kentucky was originally a part of Virginia colony, and it was not made a separate state until 1792, after independence.  Thus a copy, or multiple copies, of the same record would be found in different local and state jurisdiction records.
