OKOLONA - Betty Sue Reifers Gregory, 89, died Friday, August 5, 2011, at the family home at Poverty Hill Farms after a one- month illness. Mrs. Gregory was born in Aberdeen on September 3, 1921, the only daughter of the late John H. and Susie Patterson Reifers. She lived most of her life in Chickasaw County. She and her late husband, Willie Gregory, and their families were the owners and operators of Poverty Hill Farms, west of Okolona. Betty Sue loved being a farmer's wife. She participated with her family in farm activities and loved the land and its produce.
A 1936 graduate of Okolona High School, Betty Sue loved her home in the country and was known for her fabulous meals and flare for entertaining her family and many friends. An active and engaged member of the First United Methodist Church of Okolona, she was a longtime Sunday school teacher and former President of the United Methodist Women. She was active in Okolona community life and a member of the 20th Century Club. An avid golfer and bridge player, she will long be remembered as the matriarch of a grateful family and the perfect role model for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30PM Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Okolona with Rev. H.B. Miller, Rev. Bill Harrison and Rev. Dr. Bryan Coller officiating. Steve Holland and Jane Tisdell will deliver the eulogies. Burial will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5PM-8PM Monday at the Okolona Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors and from 1 PM-service time Tuesday.
Survivors include her three children: Kathy Gregory Stuart (Bill), Bill Gregory (Jeanine Tutor Gregory) and Bob Gregory (Patsy Stubbs Gregory), all of Okolona. Her grandchildren: Jason Etheridge (Casey) and Jenni Ethridge (Scotty), all of Corinth, Rachel Stuart Hayes (Mike) of Birmingham, Will Stuart (Cristy) and Todd Stuart, all of West Point, Ashley Gregory Jones (Don) of Huntsville, Ala., Allyson Gregory of Nashville, Tenn., Harrison Gregory (Kelly) of Tupelo, Trisha Gregory, Susannah Gregory (fiance'-Woodson Whitehead) and Caroline Gregory all of New York, N.Y., five great-grandchildren, Will and Walker Jones, Loxley Ethridge, Laura Ellen and Parker Hayes and a brother, Jack Reifers of Montgomery, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Harrison "Willie" Gregory, Sr., on Dec. 7, 2005 and four brothers, John Harold, Billy, Charles and Pat Reifers.
Pallbearers will be Alan Blaine, Hudson Bryan, Kenneth Burns, Jack Gregory, Jr., John Andrew Gregory, Don Jones, Sidney McLaurin and Ray Thornton.
