I have seen multiple genealogies reporting that James died on 2 December 1898. This indicates a high level of sloppiness. He could not have died on that date, because on that date he began receiving a military pension.
He continued to receive that pension, according to his Military pension record -- available on Ancestry, where these defective genealogies are found! -- indicates his wife began receiving a widow's pension on 7 May 1908! So he died some short time before 7 May 1908.
