Notes

  • Nancy Simmons is the youngest member of the household of Bethel and Mary Simmons in 1870.  But the presence of the name Graves in what should be the first name position is confusing here.

    1870 Federal Census, Pike County, Alabama, 7 June, p 24, PO Troy, Hse/Fam #163
Simnons [sic], Bethel 63 M W Farm Laborer $500 Real Estate $500 Personal Estate b South Carolina Cannot read or write [b abt 1807]
Simnons, Mary 52 F W  Keeping House South Carolina Cannot read or write [born abt 1819]
Simnons, Jessey B 18 M W  At Home Alabama Cannot write [born abt 1852]
Simnons, Graves Nancy 9 F W  Alabama [born abt 1861]

This (Graves) Nancy Simmons matches a child in Bethel's household in 1880, when we find he has married a widow after the death of his first wife Mary.  The child Ema Simmons, age 20, seems to be the same child as Nancy of the 1870 census.  Bethel's new wife is the widowed Sarah Frances Wiggins Stroud.  Sarah's last child from her marriage to James Stroud is in this household as Ema (Emma) Stroud.  This Emma was enumerated in 1870 as 9-year-old Sarah Stroud.
