  • 1850 Federal Census, St Francois County, Missouri, 13 October, District 80, page 397 (scan 199), Hse #652, Fam #666

    Eli A Riddle 4 E b Tennessee [b abt 1846]
    Edwin R Riddle 1 M b Tennessee[b abt 1849]

This census reports that Edwin is only 1 year old, but born in Tennessee.  So if this birth state record is correct, it means that Eli and Rigina moved to Missouri soon after Edwin's birth.

Eli and Regina named their first son after a famous evangelist of their day.

"Lorenzo Dow Riddles' Namesake -- 1834  --  The basis for  Lorenzo Dow Riddles' name by his parents Eli Asberry & Regina Riddles"
--  W Riddles, summary comment on a story about the namesake of Lorenzo Dow Riddles, Ancestry.com, 09 Jun 2009

"The wife of Eli A. Riddles was listed on the 1850 St. Francois, Mo. as Regina.  Because of Richard Riddles' [b.1780-1784,] brother John W. Riddles b. 1782 & living in White Co., Tenn. of which a portion eventually became Van Buren Co., Tenn.  He & 1st wife, Nancy Caroline Simmons had several sons & daughters, one daughter was named Regina De Graffen Riddles b. 1834 who married Richmond Haston.  I do not believe this is a coincidence but rather in honor of Eli A. Riddles wife, Regina.  And they lived in Tennessee in households of either Riddles families or de Graffenreid families up through 1840, after which they are found in Mo as well as many of Richard's sons & daughters. De Graffenreid families of Tenn. removed to Missouri, Ark and finally north Texas and those found in Grayson, Cooke and surrounding counties are, I believe Regina's brothers. More information to come as research continues."

There are likewise DeGraffenreids still livngin Carroll Countym, Arkansas, where Eli mvoed from St Francois County, Missour.  No record of death has been found for Regina, no a marriage record for Eli's next wife, to ascertain whether she died before the move or after.  The 1860 census reports Eli with a new, younger wife, Hannah C (maiden name unknown), and the children born since the 1850 census are aged 8, 5 and 2.  the last child in the 1850 census, enumerated with Eli and Regina, was Ediwin, age 1.  He is reported as age 11 in the 1860 census.

1860 Federal Census, Carroll County, Arkansas, 28 August, Hickory Township, P O Carrollton, page 135, Hse #908, Fam #880
    Riddles, E A 55 M  M[ethodist] Clergyman $700 Real Estate $480 Personal Estate born S Carolina [b abt 1805]
    Riddles, Hannah C 33 F Keeps House born Tennessee [b abt 1828]
    Riddles, Napoleon B 22 M Farmer born Tennessee [b abt 1838]
    Riddles, Virginia T 18 F born Tennessee [b abt 1842]
    Riddles, Eli A 14 M born Tennessee [b abt 1846]
    Riddles, Edwin R 11 M born Tennessee [b abt 1849]
    Riddles, Florence F 8 F born Arkansas [b abt 1852]
Riddles, Mary Jane 5 F born Arkansas [b abt 1855]
    Riddles, Seaman B 2 M born Arkansas [b abt 1858]

All the children born after the 1850 census were born in Arkansas.  It has seemd to me that the older Arkansas-born child, Florence, bnorn abotu 1852, was the daughter of Hannah.  But some researchers believe Regina was her mother.  There is no documentation on any site to confirm that, no have I found any.  The question is, at this stage, moot.
