Notes

  • A descendant Wanda Tate Cox sent me information on the Tate and Teter families.  Wanda tells us that Elizabeth Teter first married William J A Watkins, and they had 4 children.  They lived in Palo Pinto County, Texas.  Their children were Sarah, E D (girl) and twins William and James.

After William's death, she married James Henry Tate and they also had 4 children, whom I show in this genealogy.  They lived in Parker County, Texas.  Martha Ann Tate was the first child born to this marriage.  Martha Ann was born in Parker County, Texas, west of Ft Worth.  She is reported in the 1870 census as 3 years old.

1870 Federal Census, Parker County, Texas, 22 August, Precinct 2, PO Fort Worth (Tarrant Co), page 55, Hse/Fam #404

    Elizabeth Tate 32 F W born Illinois [b abt 1838]
    Martha [Tate] 3 F W born Texas [b abt 1867]

In the 1880 census, Martha Ann is the oldest child still living with her father, who is now a widower.

    Martha Tate 13 W F Daughter TX MO Illinois [b abt 1867]

Martha's first husband was Nathan Bullard, who died in 1890.  In 1895 she married Franlin W Glanton.

At first the only Martha Glanton I could find was the slightly younger Martha A Glanton who is enumerated in the household of Jame Toliver Jackson in Parker County.  Martha A Tate Bullard herself was already widowed and remarried by the year 1900.  She has a son named Carley, who could be taken for Charley.

Glanton, Carley (Charley) Boarder [nephew-in-law] W M May 1899  1  TX TX TX

Her identification as a sister-in-law of James Jackson seems at first to identify her as the sister of his wife Eliza Jane Tate.  Eliza Jane Tate's sister Martha Tate Glanton's sister, whose middle initial was also A.  The birth states of the individual and the parents were also the same here for Eliza and Martha.  Further, this son Carley was 1 year old, which matches the birth of Charles W Glanton in 1899.  So it seemed obvious that this was Martha, widow of Frank.

But the expected age for Martha A Tate Bullard Glanton in 1900 would be about 36 or 37.  Then Carley could be a different name instead of an error for Charley.

Frank and Martha were reported in the 1900 census a little farther west in Stephenville, Erath County, Texas, with all the expected children including Martha's Tate son Charles W and her other children.  I am not clear on just who the other Martha A and Carley are.
