Notes
- Reid's grandson, Reid Alymer Butler III, indicates that the middle name three of them share comes from an earlier relative, Ross Almyr Butler.
"Thank you for solving the mystery of where my middle name came from. Even though it is spelled different my middle name is Alymer most probably came from Ross Almyr Butler. I wad told it was a family name just like my Uncle Ross whose name was William Ross Butler. It seems like if a Butler liked a name it or a variation was used over and over."
-- Reid Alymer Butler III, email message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 16 December 2012
In 1900, Reid is a 3-year-old in the home of his parents Bernard and Anna, in Bolivar County, Mississippi, on the Mississippi River, across from Arkansas. They have lived in Arkansas for some time since their marriage, since the first child William B was born in Arkansas.

The birth date given here, May 1897, differs from the date reported by family sources and the Social Security Death Index, 3 July 1897.
In the 1910 census, we find that Reid's mother Anna is a widow. Note also that Anna's age is reported as 36 instead of 46.

Before 1918, Aylmer had moved to New Orleans, where he registered for the US WWI draft. He reports his wife as Willa. His middle name is spelled on this card as Almyer. This record also reports he was born in Alligator, Mississippi.

In the 1920 census, Reid is enumerated in the home of his sister Annie B Scott, in Coahoma County, Mississippi. Coahoma is on the Mississippi River across from Phillips County, Arkansas. On the west side of Phillips County is Arkansas County, where members of this Butler family moved in the late 1800s.

R A's grandson Reid Butler III, tells a story about his grandparents' marriage.
"My Grandfather Reid Butler and my Grandmother Willa Birdwell (b1903 d 1972) were married in Texas were they eloped to because her Dad hated my grandfather who "stole" my grandmother from his hand picked man to be my grandmother's husband, who introduced them when my grandfather accompanied him to the Birdwell house."
-- Reid Alymer Butler III, email message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 15 December 2012
Reid and Willa married about 1927. A listing in the 1930 census matches them, except Reid's age is wrong. In this 1930 census record, Reid (Reed) is reported as 27 years old, although he was already 23 in 1920. Willa is reported as 22 years old, although in the 1940 census, she is 33, 11 years older, which is reasonable. The ages at which they were married match the current ages reported, indicating marriage in 1927.

But where is their daughter Annette, who is reported in 1940 as 12 years old? Also Reid A Butler Jr was born in March 1930, and also is missing here. I have worked with Reid A Butler III on reconstructing his grandfather's family. In our email discussion on this matter he comments:
"I know my grandparents married in Harrison County. TX in ____ and I know my Aunt Annette was about 17 months old when the 1930 census was taken and my Dad was about 45 days old b 14 March, 1930. Census taken 19 April, 1930 but why the 2 of them are not listed is still a mystery to me."

"Orville Boyd Jenkins, my dad's siblings were his older sister Annette Frank Butler Baudier, the the brother just below my dad William Ross Butler, Dan Benjamin Barnard Butler, Louise Butler also known as Susie, Virginia Butler known as pumpkin, and then Marshall Archibald Butler. Just a quick mention about my aunt Annette's middle name Frank. It was her aunt Annie's middle name as well. Her aunt's, my great-aunt's, name was Anna Frank Butler Scott. She was the sister that took care of my grandfather Reid Butler Sr after his mother had passed. I have no idea where the name Frank came from."
