Notes

  • Initial evidence indicated that Joseph Thomas Stroud was the son of James W (or James H in some records) Stroud and Sarah Frances Wiggins.  But there were loose ends.  One Stroud genealogist clarifies that with a critical bit of family information.

Child of James W. Stroud is not Joseph Thomas Stroud
"The child of James W. Stroud was Joseph Edward Stroud who married Frances Cordelia Sanders. This Joseph was born about 1859. I don't know when he died. My great grandfather was Joseph Thomas Stroud who married Martha L. Cain. He, too, was born about 1859. Joseph Thomas Stroud did not know who his father was. His mother was Elefair Stroud (probably the sister of James W. Stroud).

A marriage record for a Joseph Stroud appears to be for this individual.

Several genealogies report a date of death for Joseph, but provide no documentation.
15 May 1932 - Age: 73 Victoria, Coffee, Alabama, USA

With this date I found an Alabama death record, but it has only the month, not the day.

    Alabama Deaths, 1908-59
    Volume 19, Roll 3, Page #9324
    J. T. Stroud
    Death May 1932 Coffee County

A transcription of information on the death certificate has the full information.  But that record also reveals something else.  This seems to be a different Joseph T Stroud, because the mother's name is reported as Ella Stroud, whereas the Joseph T Stroud we are reporting on is the son of Sarah Frances Wiggins and James W Stroud.  Our Joseph is documented with his mother in this 1860 census (see above) and with his widowed mother in 1870.

His mother is reported as Frances in 1860 and Sarah in 1870 (see above).  Thus it seems several genealogies have the death information for the wrong Joseph T Stroud attached to the son of Sarah Frances Wiggins and her husband James W Stroud.

The death record cited here does not report his father for some reason.  My tree does not have an Ella married to a Stroud in this line, so I have not yet (as of August 2013) identified this Ella Stroud and her son Joseph T.  The actual image of the death certificate is not available for viewing on Ancestry.com, only their transcription

Alabama, Deaths and Burials Index, 1881-1974
    J T Stroud
    Birth Date abt 1866
Death 15 May 1932 Victoria, Coffee, Alabama
    Death Age 66
    Married, Male
    Mother Name Ella Stroud
    Spouse Name Martha Stroud

A memorial in Find a Grave provides a photo and information on a Thomas Stroud with the matching birth date for our Joseph Thomas Stroud in 1859.  But the death date is the same as that on the death certificate above.  The wife's name on the double grave also matches, Martha  Stroud, born March 2, 1862, Died Dec 25, 1950.  The presence of his wife until 1950 is a new problem here, since in the 1910 census, J T was reported as being widowed.  Was later married to another woman also name Martha?  Not likely if he died in 1932.

This Thomas Stroud is also buried with other Strouds of our family in the Pleasant Ridge Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Coffee County, Alabama.  These facts may indicate that this Thomas Stroud is the same as our Joseph Thomas Stroud, but the name of his mother was recorded incorrectly on the death certificate.  I cannot account for the name Ella Stroud nor the report that he is widowed in 1930..  It seems to be a different Thomas Stroud, but I cannot find another individual of this name..
