  • The first documented record of Martin L Keith is the 1850 census.

Martin L Keith 14 Male Farmer  born Georgia [b abt 1836]

Originally I got the name of Deanna Terry's husband from the Terry family History in about September 2007.  This had no birth information or other details.  In interim months I added more Terry and Keith information.  As I was researching the Terrys and Keiths again in August 2008, I found an M L Keith living near other Keiths who were kin to the Terrys.

The age and proximity indicated this was Martin L Keith, son of Martin Keith and Mary Jane Roper, who were living 2 houses down from M L, 23 years old in 1860.  This matched the Martin L Keith with them in 1850.  His wife was named Catherine, age 22, born in Georgia as M L Keith was.  This age, with an estimated birth year of 1838, fit the limited info on Deanna Terry, born about 1839 in census information related to the Terrys.

This appears to be the right match, and enables us to fill out the information on Deanna, missing from other spotty Terry resources.  It appears that her full name was Deanna Catherine or Catherine Deanna.  Keith family genealogies give us the full name of Martin, being Martin Lafayette Keith, born 6 November 1835.  This is a little off from the census information, as we might expect.  In the 1850 census, Martin Keith, son of Martin and Jane, was 14, meaning birth in about 1836.  As we saw, his age in the July 1860 census would be about 1837, which could be 1836 depending on the month of his birth.  I will follow the exact date reported by several Keith family genealogies.

In 1870, Martin's mother Jane is living with them.  This is the last reference I find to Mary Jane Roper Martin, who apparently died some time after the 1870 census.

Not enough information is available to know who the parents of George Keith are.

By 1900 Martin and Kate have moved to Whitfield County, Georgia, just south of Hamilton County, Tennessee, where the county seat is Chattanooga.
