• Carmen is first reported in Montana where she was born, in the 1920 census.  Form her age here we can determine that her parents moved to Montana sometime in about 1915.

  Carmen, along with her whole family, was reported in the Montana census, in the household of her maternal grandparents.  But then they were again enumerated in their previous home of Frederick, Oklahoma, before the end of January 1920.  Since Carmen was born in Montana, it appears they had all moved to Montana in about 1916, then Jim and Amanda must have made a trip back after the January 2 enumeration of the Carpenter-Briscoe farm in Musselshell County, Montana.  They arrived before the census taker made it to their street in Frederick, and were enumerated again there.
  
  A complicating factor for this scenario is that the next child Helen was also born in the same Montana county in July of 1920.  Also they were not enumerated in someone else's household, but are reporting renting their residence in Frederick.  So their presence in Oklahoma less than one month after they were enumerated in Montana is not fully explained.  Maybe they were just back for a visit, whatever their housing situation.  For whatever reason, they were back in Montana before the birth of the next child Helen in July 1920.

  There is a difference of one year in the reported age of Carmen in these two censuses taken the same month.  It appears the Frederick, Oklahoma, version is correct, in light of other factors.  Note the reported birth date in her death record, matching the Oklahoma age report, with birth in 1917.  Her age in the 1930 census also supports the 1917 date.
  
  They later moved from Montana to Minnesota, between 1921 and 1926, the birth years of their next two children, Helen and Bernard.  They were back in Frederick, Oklahoma, for the 1930 census.

  They moved back to Amanda's home state of Iowa at some time before 1933, when the family is listed in the City Directory for Mason City, Iowa.
