Notes

  • In 1850, I find James Randall (spelled Randal) with his parents and siblings in Cleveland County, North Carolina, at age 15.

1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 5 September, page 309 (scan 160), Hse/Fam #619

Thos P Randal 6 months M born North Carolina [b abt January 1860]

Living not far away is a Jacob Randal, who is also a Wagon Maker.  At age 50, he could be an older brother of James' father Martin.  Jacob and his family live in House #611, a couple of pages prior to Martin and his family.  It is not clear why Rachel, a 14-year-old, was listed at the end, rather than in the age sequence normal in the census.

My surmise that Jacob was James' brother was confirmed by a descendant.

"My information indicates that this Jacob R. Randall was born 2 NOV 1799 and died 21 NOV 1889 and he was a Wagon Maker. Additionally he built Pine Grove Methodist Church in Boiling Springs, NC for which he was given a farm. His wife was Catherine Jane Wells and yes Jacob R. Randall was the brother of Martin May Randall who was my great, great, great grandfather. Martin May Randall and Jacob R. Randall's father was Silas Randall. Jacob R. was perhaps named after his grandfather Jacob Randall who was the first to settle in NC near Kings Mountain on the NC/SC line and was born in New Jersey.

By 1860, James have established his own household with Eunice Elizabeth Green.  In the 1870 census, we see Eunice's nickname Nicy, a common nickname for Eunice in the 1800s.
