    An actual summary of service in the file related to Mary's pension request reports that Ben enlisted 4 November 1861.  Last service date on record was 22 December 1863, when he was furloughed to go to Texas.  The report indicates no further service entry was in the record.

    It is shown by the records that B F Smith, private, Company C, 32d TExas Cavalry, Confederate State Army, enlisted November 4, 1861.  On the muster roll of that company dated April 5, 1864 (the last on file), he is reported as "Absent, furloughed for 50 days, 22d December, 1863, by order General Johnston to go to Texas -- supposed to be there yet."  No later record of his has been found.
