Married Mary Polly WEATHERS

Notes

  • In 1850, Richard and his wife Mary Polly Weathers are living 2 doors down from Mary's sister Catherine (spelled Catharine here) Weathers and her husband George McSwain.  Richard and Mary Polly's son John Franklin, age 9 in 1850, moves later to Arkansas, and is the first of this McSwain clan to arrive in Ethel, Prairie Township of Arkansas County.

John Franklin and his wife Mary are accompanied by George and Catherine's son Francis to Arkansas, where they were registered as two households next door to each other in the 1870 census.  Before the move, George had died, and Catherine and the rest of the family moved west, but stayed for a while in Jefferson County, Tennessee, where we find them reported in the 1870- census.  Catherine and the rest of her family arrive in Prairie Township about 1875-76.

In the 1850 census for Cleveland County, North Carolina, we find the following listing for Richard and Polly McSwain and children.

1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 4 September, page 157, Hse/Fam #587
Richard McSwain 38 M  Farmer born North Carolina (b abt 1812)
    Polly McSwain 36 F NC (b abt 1814)
    Elizabeth McSwain 15 NC
    Burton McSwain 13 NC
    Jefferson McSwain 11 NC
    John McSwain 17 NC
    Nancy McSwain 7 NC
    George McSwain 5 NC
    Wallace McSwain 3 NC

In 1860 Polly is listed as Mary.  Family sources tell me this is Mary Polly Weathers.  She may be a sister of Catherine Weathers, wife of George McSwain.  The following were listed in 1860 for the household of Richard and Mary McSwain, in the census for Cleveland County, North Carolina.

1860 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 7 August, page 59-60, Hse/Fam #425
    Richard E McSwain 48 M  Farmer born North Carolina (b abt 1812)
Mary McSwain 40 F NC [Note that Polly/Mary has aged only 4 years!] (b abt 1820)
Burton McSwain 23 Farm Labor NC (b abt 1837)
John F McSwain 17 Farm Labor NC (b abt 1843)
    George McSwain 13 NC (b abt 1847)
    Wallace McSwain 11 NC (b abt 1849)
    Mary J McSwain 8 NC (b abt 1852)
    Sarah E McSwain 25 NC (b abt 1825)

Listed last In this household is a Sarah E McSwain 25.  The age and middle initial E match the child recorded as Elizabeth in 1850.  It is interesting that Sarah E is listed last though the oldest.

Several genealogies reprot that Richard died in 1889.  But none has any documentation, and I have found no documentation of his death.
