Notes

An early anonymous genealogy had very early dates for the children of George Washington Butler and his wife Sarah (Sallie) Brown. The date for Ben B Butler's birth was 1867, but in the 1880 census, no child is older than 9 years old, and Ben is only 8, thus born about 1872.

In the 1900 census, there is one son, reported as Jack B, who matches closely to Benjamin B. He is in the same birth order, between Mary and Robert (Harvey). Jack's birth date is reported as September 1873, one year different from the age reported in the 1880 census. With that birthday, in 1880 he would not have been 8 for a couple of months. This is closer than some. It appears for some reason Ben is being called Jack by 1900.

The birth date here is later than allowed by the age reported in the 1880 census. It would be more likely 1872, but could have been 1871. The grave reports only the year of birth, 1871, which we may take to be accurate. I am including the month from the 1900 census, but the year from the gravestone. The years, for some reason, in the 1900 census, commonly are one year later than actual birth, sometimes two.
