Notes

  • Nicholas Thomas came to the US in 1850 from Prussia, the leading German state at that time.  (It was Prussia, which had absorbed all the German states except Austria, against whom the British and their allies fought in World War I.)  A descendant, Donna Thomas Mondier, found the information on the Thomas family's move to the US.  Nicholas is listed in the passengers sailing from Bremen to Galveston, Texas.

Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s
Primary Immigrant: Thomas, Nic, from Neufilzen; family of 4.  The ship's name was Estafette, Captain Heyen, departure of Sept 19, 1850 from Bremen to Galveston arriving in Nov of 1850
--  Originally published in a weekly newspaper of Rudolfstadt, Thuringia, Allgemein Auswanderungs-Zeitung (General Emigration Newspaper), vol. 4 (1850).
--  From Bremen to America in 1850: Fourteen Rare Emigrant Ship Lists by Clifford Neal Smith (German-American Genealogical Research Monograph, 22, McNeal, AZ: Westland Publications, 1987. 35p.), pp 17 and 18

More details about the family are found in the Notes for his daughter Mary Elizabeth Thomas, who married Thomas Lewis/Louis Terry in Brazos County, Texas, where the Thomases settled.

A researcher on the Zerbst side of this family found a listing in a publication with information about the death and burial of Nicholas.

"I have come across information that lists Nicholas Thomas (9/6/1813-10/31/1868) as being buried in the Schultze Cemetery in Brazos County.  It is not information listed on Find-A-Grave.  It was in a book at the Carnegie Library in Bryan, TX.  I am trying to research this cemetery because I believe my GGG grandparents, Carl and Henrietta Zerbst (Catherine Thomas Zerbst in-laws) may be buried there."
