Notes

  • ----------------
I have traced my family's origins to Shropshire, England to my ancestor John Jenkins, 1656-1717, married to Martha Garner, 1656-1752.  They settled in Westmoreland County, Virginia. ...

They had two sons, Ezekiel Jenkins, 1695-1750, & William Jenkins, 1704-1747.  William Jenkins had one son, William Jenkins - 1740-1787, had 4 sons, one of which was James Randolph Jenkins, 1760-1824, who was born in Fairfax County, Va., & had 19 children, one of which was Samuel M. Jenkins, 1789-1872, who was the father of my great grandfather, Owen Selvy Jenkins, who died of wounds from the civil war at the age of 35.  Samuel M. Jenkins was the first of this set of Jenkinses to be born in Union County, South Carolina.

Some genealogies report that Sam's father is from Virginia, but report his mother born in South Carolina.

Samuel's age is reported as the same in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  He is reported as 66 years old both times.  Neither of these is right, according to his Bible record, reported to me by another researcher.  The entry there says he was born in 1791, making him about 59 in 1850 and about 69 in 1860.  Sam's wife Sara Catherine is missing here, and presumed dead before 1850.  I have not found a death record.

"According to his Bible record Samuel was born Nov 5, 1789, Sarah Catherine was born 26 Feb 1791. Samuel died after 1870, his son John James Jenkins bought his property and each heir is listed on the court document Dated January 1873."

In comments on a photo of Sam (attached to this profile), another descendant reports his middle initial as M.

"This photo on metal plate was from my Grandfather's things. On the back it reads 'S. M Jenkin,' or Jenkins, but the s on the end is not visible. S M Jenkins was my Grandfather's Great-Great Grandfather."

In 1850 other Jenkins and Burell family members are living nearby.  Next door to Samuel and his children is John (Berry) Burrell, married to Sam's daughter Polly (Mary Ann) Jenkins. Others enumerated on the same page are Isabella Burrell and her husband John Jenkins.  He is reported by one genealogy as John James Jenkins, another son of Samuel.

With the dates of birth of the other known children of Samuel M Jenkins and his wife Sara, John could have been born around 1825, as reported.  But this does match any child reported by other sources.  Also on the same page are a brother of John and Isabella Burrell, William (Riley) Burrell, who is married to Sam Jenkins' daughter Anna (Anne) Jenkins.

The youngest girl, Sally, age 4 in 1850, has either gotten married early (age 14 or earlier) or died before this census.  Nancy appears to be the second wife of Samuel, since she has not appeared with the family before, and Samuel had no wife in 1850.  Elizabeth is a daughter of the first wife.  A genealogy reports the name of the first wife as Sara Catherine, with maiden name unknown.

This genealogy reports no death date, and from other sources, her death date is unknown.  That genealogy reports all children as the children of Sara, but has no second wife.  Sara Catherine is reported born in 1790.

This would mean that when Richard (Dick) was born in 1849,  Sara was about 59 years old.  This is not very likely, though perhaps possible.  This genealogy also, lacking the 1850 and 1870 censuses, reports Nancy as a child of Samuel, rather than his wife.  But there is no child named Nancy in the 1850 census.

In the 1870 census, there are two females in the household with Sam, one is Nancy, correctly reported as 10 years older than in 1860.  Betsie (nickname for Elizabeth) might be the daughter Elizabeth reported in 1860, but her reported age in 1870 is 13 years greater than in 1860.  I have not found any further documentation to clarify Nancy's relationship to Samuel.
