Notes

  • In 1850 Mary Elizabeth and her brother John are enumerated as Mary and John, in the household of their step-father John Stokes, the second husband of widow Mary Pinot Dumont.

1850 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 1 November, Chester Township, page 140, Hse/Fam #268
John Stokes  30 M Farmer born Tennessee
Mary Stokes 28 F born Arkansas
Elizabeth Dumond 2 F born Arkansas
John Dumond 14 M born Arkansas

These two children are mentioned in their grandmother's estate settlement.  It is from this statement that we learn the middle name of Mary, sister of John.  The statement mentions these two children of Pierre (Peter) Dumont and his wife Mary Pinot, listing them as "John and Elizabeth Dumond, who are together entitled to one share."  The estate settlement gives no ages for any persons.

There was only one church in the area, on the south side of the River upriver a good bit from Arkansas Post.  The parish priest performed itinerant services for the communities in the territory.  We see Mary Elizabeth was baptized some time after May 1850, according to the date range of the church registry, as compiled and transcribed by the Grand Prairie Historical Society.  The actual record pages are not available in this transcription.
