Notes

• Censuses for this family show the first child in 1850 as James C, age 8.  He appears in 1860 as James, age 16.  Ages in the 1800s censuses were often very general, and even if accurate could vary by two years due to birth dates and censuses dates in each year.

  James is not in his parents' home in the 1870 census, but I have not found him enumerated elsewhere either.  He may have been killed in the Civil War.  His parents claimed on his Civil War pension in 1884 and 1890 (see below).
  
  There is another child of this family named James who appears for the first time under this name in the 1880 census.  This is another likely indication that James C died inteh war.  This second James matches the child reported in 1870 as Tipton S.
