Notes

  • 1870 Federal Census, Pickens County, Georgia, 12 July, PO Jasper, page 75, Hse/Fam #585
    Mullins, Green D 37 M W Farmer $50 Real Estate $100 Personal  b South Carolina [b abt 1833]
Mullins, Jane [second wife] 30 F W  Keeping House Georgia  Cannot read or write [b abt 1840]
Mullins, Pearson J 9  M W At Home Georgia  Can read or write [b abt 1861]

In 1880, It appears that Pearson is living with his brother Elias, along with two other brothers.  His name is unreadable here.  The person matching age most closely with Pearson in 1870 has a partially faded name that appears to begin with Jef, matching the initial J in 1870.

1880 Federal Census, Bartow County, Georgia, 6 June, Allatoona District 519, page 12D, Hse/Fam #103
Mullen, Elias  W M 32  Husband Farm Laborer GA GA GA Cannot write

Mullen, Jef? [Pearson J?] W M 18 Brother GA GA GA Cannot read or write

A Mullins researcher has told me that Brantley Mullins wrote his brother's name as Mc Pierson.

"Doctor Brantley Mullen in his eastern cherokee application stated his brothers names were:  Christopher Columbus Mullins, Elias Mullow Mullins, Mc Pierson B. Mullins, and that he had no sisters."

A genealogy containing credible detail and documentation reports this person's name as Mack Pearson Mullins.

    Mack Pearson Mullins
    Birth 1856 in Georgia
Death 24 Mar 1942 in Cartersville, Bartow, Georgia
    Parents:
    Green D Mullins 1831-1894
    Elizabeth J Caldwell 1833-1868
Spouse Willie S Dollar [1920 census has it clearly as Willie A]
    Birth abt 1862 in Georgia
Death 1935 in Cartersville, Bartow, Georgia (no marriage date given)
    --  Rushing/Bohannon, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7274868/person/-1129040093?ssrc=&ftm=1

His name on his marriage record was Pierce M Mulins.  This is interpreted by some genealogists as meaning two given names, Pierce Mack Mullins.

Georgia, Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978
    Willie S Dollar, Female
    Pierce M Mullins, Male
Marriage 4 August 1881 Floyd County, Georgia, USA
    Ceremony by Gabriel Jones, JP
    Recorded 23 September 1881 Floyd County Marriage Book, p 374, Record #1153

The birth date given here is later than that yielded by the age in the 1860 and 1870 census.  The 1920 census is closer to the date given in the Rushing information.

1920 Federal Census, Bartow County, Georgia, 28 January, Stamp Creek Township, District 15, page 11A, Cartersville-Canton Rd, Hse/Fam #8
Mullins, Mack P Head Owns M W 65 GA GA GA Baptist Clergyman [b abt 1854]
    Mullins, Willie A Wife F W 58 GA AL GA [b abt 1861]
Mullins, Pearlena Dau F W 16 GA AL GA

Next door appears to be Mack's son Jefferson Mullins and his family, and in Jefferson's household another son Fred Mullins.

    Georgia Death Index
    Mack P Mullins
Death 24 Mar 1942 Bartow County
Age 86 years [est year of birth 1856]
    White Male

The difference in age and thus birth year here originally made me wonder if Mack P Mullins is really the same person as Pearson Mullins, son of Green D Mullins.  But the additional information about the form of his name Mc Pierson leads me to think we should, as often necessary, ignore the census ages.  The 1870 entry could have been a simple handwritten error, writing only the 9 of 19.  I can't account for the J/Jef or the B reported by his brother Brantley.
