The report is somewhat confusing at first, reporting that John was "mustered out on 31 Aug 1864." However, this is the date of his death, so he was "mustered out" by death. His death in the war is probably one reason we find his son John H Keith in the home of his mother's parents. John is in the home of James A Whittemore and his wife Melinda, the parents of his mother Sonora. Note that some sources, including family genealogies, spell her family name as Whittamore.
