Consistent with the pronunciation patterns of the local dialect, the1870 census reports Gilead as Gilliard.  The 1880 census gives us theformal form of "Gilliard's" name, which we find in various sources,Gilead.  Several family sources and public records vary in recordingGilliard's name as either Gilliard or Gilead.

The elite southern speech would pronounce the name "Gilliard" verysimilarly or exactly the same as the separate name Gilead.  Hismother's obituary names him Squire Gilead Green, Squire apparentlybeing also a given name and not the old feudal title.

The mother's name here is typed as Lamar.  It is the first indicationI have had that Lamar was one of Hannah's names.  Perhaps this was atypo for her name Hannah.  There are several other misspellings here, including the county name (which I have entered correctly), andobviously Gilliard's name itself.  Notice here also that the name forGilliard's father is given as James Monroe Green.  This takes us backto a discussions and uncertainty even within the family over thisname.

It is documented in various sources and asserted in family sources asboth James Moore Green and James Monroe Green.  The doctor filling outGilliard's death certificate also comments that he has known Gilliardall his life, so we would think he would know the correct name ofGilliard's father.  But other errors on this certificate and theuncertainty of the name of the mother here as Lamar (a man's name, andevidenced nowhere else I have seen) throws doubt on this source asuncertain.  His mother's newspaper obituary in 1931 is well-styled andknowledgeable, and it presents his name as Squire Gilead Green.

There is a matching record for his burial in Find a Grave.

But there is also a matching grave in Antioch Baptist Cemetery nearBlacksburg, just over the border in South Caroilna, where othermembers of his family are buried.  Gilead has a joint marker herewhere his first wife Rachel was buried, and his second wife's nmae isalso on the stone, making it a triple stone.  Gilead's (Gilliard's)Gravestone there records both wives, as does the memorial above forthe Double Springs grave.
