The Hamrick Data Pages report that Judith married Reuben McSwain about 1865.  We find the young couple farming in 1870, with the help of a hired boy on the farm.  They have no children yet.  If the 1865 date is right, Judith was only about 15 when they married.  In the 1870 census she is called Julia.  This name Judith got entered in numerous ways for every individual with that name.  Besides Julia, we find such individuals called Judah or Judea, with or without the final H.

There is a conflict in the record as I have understood it.  In the June 1880 census for Reuben, his wife J M is enumerated with him.  But there is a record of death that also appears to be for Reuben's wife Judith Margaret.  The age of J M in this death record, 27, matches the age in the family enumeration.

The death record reports that J M McSwain died in November 1879.  Her death is recorded in the mortality tables of the 1880 census for North Carolina, but I have not seen an actual death certificate.  This matches the reported birth of Elijah McSwain here in November 1979.

The 1880 census child Elijah matches the child Elijah reported by the Hamrick data.  So it seems that Judith died in childbirth with Elijah, even though she is stil recorded as Reubin's wife.

However, the Hamrick Data Pages report that an unnamed child of the family was born about 1880.  Despite their report that a child was born about 1880, the Hamrick data also reports that Judith Margaret McSwain did die in 1879!  The Hamrick data includes no discussion or explanation.

In the 1900 census I found Judith's son Elijah living in the household of Judith's brother Berryman (called Berry in this census).  He is in a household of several nieces and nephews of Berry, whom I cannot identify.  Note that as occurs over half the time in the 1900 census, Elijah's year of birth is wrong, saying 1879 when we know his mother died in November 1879.
