    Obituary of Captain William Strange 1836-1901
    William Strange was the eldest son of David William Strange and Elizabeth Wood.  He was born on December 17, 1836, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.  William came to Walker County around 1845, with his parents.  David William Strange was a farmer in Walker County until his death in 1869 at the age of 54.  In the 1860 census, William Strange was listed as a farmer in the Pond Springs District of Walker County.

    William enlisted in the Confederate Army in March 1862.  After rising to the rank of Captain, he was captured in late 1863, and held prisoner at Rock Island, Illinois until late 1864.

    After the war, Captain Strange served as a Sheriff over eleven counties including Walker and Catoosa Counties.  Captain Strange married Nancy Ann Boss in 1857 in Walker County.  They had the following ten children:  Henry Lucien, born December 5, 1858; died October 1876; William Johnson, born September 29, 1860, died 1943; Lula Ann, born March 16, 1862; died July 26, 1949; John H Morgan, born May 9, 1864; died November 30, 1865; Gordon Lee, born December 19, 1866; died August 29, 1929; Stella J, born May 7, 1869; died August 7, 1906; Florence Octavia, born October 11, 1871; died May 6, 1889; Cicero James, born February 8, 1874; died November 7, 1967; Julia Etta, born June 3, 1877; died September 1, 1882; Charles Edgar, born September 1, 1879; death unknown; All of the children were born in Walker County.

    Captain William Strange left Walker County in the summer of 1887 and moved to Morrilton, Arkansas.  In 1889, Captain Strange moved to Chelsea, Oklahoma, where he died on May 28, 1901.
