In 1900, living next door to John and his family appears to be his brother Robert. Enumerated as R D Shields, his wife's name is Emma M. Like John, his birthplace is Texas, and his father is reported born in Tennessee and his mother in Missouri. (Though it seems Illinois is the correct state of birth for their mother.) In 1880, their mother was reported as born in Tennessee, as was their father. Note that in 1910, John's mother is reported born in Kentucky, and in 1920, it is Tennessee again. In 1930 he either did not report his mother's birth state or the enumerator failed to write it down at the time, reporting only US.
