Notes

  • At least one genealogy has his Elisha's name as Elisha Champion Grubbs.  A memorial on Find a Grave which references a gravestone in Drew County, Arkansas, has this full name, with the stone itself identifying him as All sources report him born in Georgia.  A record in the 1880 census has Champion and Caroline L Grubbs, who match other records for this couple. I found a 1900 census for this family still in Drew County, Arkansas.  So this determines that this is not the family of James Grubbs, who was born in McLennan County, Texas.  Another family which I found in McLennan County, Texas, fit the pattern of James' family.  Both heads of households are enumerated as Elisha Grubbs in 1900.  This Elisha (Champion) Grubbs is a first cousin of Elisha C(olumbus), who was the father of James Richard Grubbs.

This death record indicates that Elisha moved back to his home area in Arkansas after living in Oklahoma.  This is confirmed when we see the 1930 census, where he is enumerated in the household of his daughter Ada B Mays.  The Find-a-Grave memorial reports the same date of death as the Arkansas death record cited above, but the birth date is different from the 1900 census for Elisha.  A difference in the year is common in 1900, but there is also a different month, February instead of September as on the gravestone.
