Notes

  • Lists and genealogies I see list 10 children of Emma with HuddlestonYork.  The 1900 census reports she has borne 10 children, but two ofthem have died.  Details are not complete, since several were bornbefore 1880 and no census is available for 1890.  So only the firstcensus for some children is available.  This includes Thomas, theoldest, reported born about 1871 or 1872.

Though listed in most, if not all, genealogies, and in a list onHuddleston's Find-a-Grave memorial, the first child, Thomas, is notthe child of Emma.  Censuses report this with several details in 1880and 1900.  In 1880, Thomas is reported as a 9-year-old child.  Theoldest child Thomas is listed last, normally indicating the child of aprevious wife.

The 1900 census confirms that Thomas was not the daughter of Emma. That census reports the length of marriage, telling us that Huddlestonand Emma have been married 26 years.  That is, they married about1874, about 3 years after Thomas was born and one year before Busbywas born, the first child reported in the 1880 census.

Since the 1910 census reports that Emma had already borne 10 childrenand only 8 are living, one child not in any census was born and diedbetween censuses.  Thomas is not her child, and there are 9 otherslisted.  We do not have enough information yet to determine which oneof the children listed in 1880 or 1900 died.  Four of the 5 listed in1900 are still in the home in 1910.  We have additional information onFrances (Fannie) and her later family.  So 5 are accounted for.

Four additional children are listed in the 1880 census, making ninechildren of Emma.  Those children in the 1880 census would have justgrown up and moved away from the home before 1900.  Another unnamedchild also was born and died between the censuses to make the total of10 reported in 1910.
