The age of Abraham here is a puzzle. He does not appear in the 1860 census with his parents, though according to this census, he should have been 2 years old. A family genealogy also reports that he was born 26 January 1861. It seems odd that his parents would have overestimated his age by 2-3 years, but that appears to be what happened. Dates, ages and the passage of time were not the cultural focus they became in the scientific information age of the 20th century. If the family source is correct, Abraham is actually only 9 years old in January 1870.
