- In the 1850 census, the mother of Frances and Louisa Spain is named Margaret E. In the 1860 census, she is Martha E. She is a 50-year-old widow in both censuses, but the head of the household in 1850 is her son William H Spain. In 1860, the head of household is Martha E Spain, aged 53! Despite the aging of only 3 years in reported age in the censuses, this otherwise appears to be the same person.

Some genealogies have another child, Sidney G Spain, born about 1838. He should have been about 12 in 1850, so where was he when that census was taken? In the 1880 census, he and his wife are recorded in the same area of Panola County. He, like the other children, is reported as born in Virginia. Confirming the relationship, his sister Louisa (L J) is in his household.
