Notes

  • For a long time I was unable to find the name of Willads Peter Willadson.  By September 2009, I found many more records sets had been digitized and placed online, enabling me to find more information.  Also, I found that other genealogies had been prepared and posted by that time than provided more information from family sources.  The Carrigan Family Genealogy provided some specific details that fill out the life of Willads and his family.

    Willads Peter Willadson
BIRTH: 8 MAY 1862, Alstrup, Denmark
DEATH: 14 JUN 1945, Hallock, MN
Father: Peder Villadsen, Mother: Mette Catrine Myrtue
Spouse Oline Christine Berthelsen, MARRIAGE: 20 JUL 1885
    --  Carrigan Genealogy, http://www.carriganlane.com/w_dir/d0000/g0000085.html#I0889

Here the Carrigan information reports the birthplace of Willads as Alstrup.  The town of Alstrup is in Arhuus, Zealand, where there is a university.  This genealogy reports the marriage of Willads' parents as Alstrup, but it is a town in the Northern Jylland (Nordjylland).  I determined that Alstrup, Jylland, was likely what was intended.  Danish sources spell the name Ålstrup.

In most of the censuses, the head of the Willadson household is recorded with the first name Willis.  However, in the 1905 Iowa state census, he is enumerated as Willade Willadson.  This makes me think this was the original Danish form, normally spelled in Danish as Willad, sometimes as Villad.  The Willadsen family name can be traced in various lines to an individual named variously Willadz, Willads, Willad, Villad, etc.  I found that the Minnesota Death Index reports his name as Willads, a common historical form of this old Danish name.  I would think either that of the form Willade in the 1905 census would be the correct form for the given name of Mr Willadson.

This spelling of the name appears also in the fairly consistent and complete genealogy by Alan Kent Boucher.  Two brothers were named Willads.  One, Willads Pederson, remained in Denmark, while Willads Niels came to the US with his brother.

    Vocation and Romance
Alan Kent Boucher, 18 Jan 2010

Willads Pedersen lived out his life in Denmark.  Willads Willadsen and Soren Peter Wilson (brothers) came to America together.  Willads Willadson changed the "e" to "o" in his name when he came to America.  Willads Willadson was the middle child with Willads Pedersen being the oldest and Soren Peter being the youngest.

Willis Jr is the only one whose last name is spelled as the family now spells it, Willadson.  The last person appears to be Olina's widowed father.

By 1905, Olina's father is no longer in the household, presumably having died during the last ten years.  This census records only the names of the individuals in each household, no details as in previous state censuses and in the federal censuses.

In 1910 the census enumerator heard the name Willads as the English "Willis," or Willads has reported it this way.  This census tells us that Willads (Willis) and Oline married in about 1885 ("married 25 years").  Their first child Bartle (Berthel) was born about 2 years later.

In 1920 Willads is listed as Willis again.  The 1920 census tells Willads and Oline they got married in Iowa, and not Denmark.  We see this because of the different dates of immigration to the US.  Willads (Willis) came to the US in 1880, while Oline did not come until 1882.  They married in about 1895, based on the 1910 census.  It is possible he actually decided to change his name (at least informally) to Willis, as his brother changed his last name to Wilson.
