British Monarch. Queen consort of King Edward II. Daughter of PhilippeIV the Fair of France and Joan of Navarre. She married Edward in 1308,shortly after he'd ascended the throne. Isabella never held the titleof Princess of Wales, as portrayed in the film Braveheart. Though themarriage produced 4 children, Edward had homosexual preferences, andthe union was not a happy one. When her brother Charles IV of Franceseized Edward's French holdings, Isabella sailed to France to raise anarmy against her husband. There she became involved with RogerMortimer, Earl of March. Together the lovers raised an army andinvaded England, forcing Edward to abdicate in favor of his eldestson, Edward III. The young king was only 14, and Isabella and Mortimerruled as regents. They plotted to kill the deposed king (some believethey did cause his death), but Edward III remembered their disloyalty, and had Mortimer executed for treason. His mother was forced to retireto Castle Rising in Norfolk, where she died. (bio by: Kristen Conrad)
