Notes

  • 1840 United States Federal Census, Phillips County, Arkansas, Mooney Township, page 83 Miles Knowlton head of household Males 2 Under age 5; 1 x 5-10; 1 x 10-15; 1 x 30-40 Females 2 x 5-10; 1 x 30-40  By 1850, Miles is a widower.  The youngest child enumerated in his household is 2 years old, so Mary died no earlier than 1848.  Mary Nell Burnett reports the actual birth date of Oregon Knowlton as 26 January 1849.  So he is not actually 2 years old yet.  Thus his mother Mary died after 26 January 1849.  1850 Federal Census, Phillips County, Arkansas, 31 October, Moony [Mooney] Township, page 290, Hse/Fam #53 Miles Knowlton 45 M Farmer $3700 Real Estate b Connecticut (b abt 1805) Robt Knowlton 10 M b Arkansas Malissa Knowlton 7 F b Arkansas Waldo Knowlton 4 b Arkansas Origan Knowlton 2 M b Arkansas Wilson Tucker 17 M Farmer b Arkansas James Kazz 30 M Farmer b South Carolina  In the 1850 census we see in Miles' household a Wilson Tucker.  This would be Mary Twedell's son by her first husband William Tucker.  I have not identified James Kazz.  This may be a boarder.  Perhaps he is a farm hand, though he is described as a Farmer, seeming to imply he has his own farm.  1860 Federal Census, Phillips County, Arkansas, 26 June, Mooney Township, PO Gillins Landing, page 42, Hse #327, Fam #313 Miles Knowlton 54 M Farmer $45,275 Real Estate $24,465 Personal b Connecticut (b abt 1806) Robt Knowlton 20 M Clerk b Arkansas Malissa Knowlton 18 F b Arkansas Oregon Knowlton 12 M b Arkansas  I have not included earlier Knowlton ancestors.  There is some discrepancy among sources and genealogies, and Knowltons are a subsidiary line for this genealogy, the Knowltons being a cousin line to one of the McSwain cousin lines.  In February 2010 I received a good note of background from Elizabeth Knowlton providing some good information.  =========================================== Just came across your great database in rootsweb.com (with sources, no less!)  I wonder if you are interested in tracing Miles Knowlton, b 1802, CT, back any farther.  He appears in the Knowlton history (1897) by Chas. Stocking on p. 204 as marrying "Mrs. Tucker" and having three children in Arkansas where he died in 1866.  He is the son of Abel Knowlton (who had 15 children) and Barbara Dimock of Connecticut.  Abel (#498) married twice and also moved to Arkansas where he died in 1844.  Abel was the son of Abraham and Molly Knox Knowlton of Ashford, CT; Abraham was the son of Robert and Hannah Robinson Knowlton who moved from Ipswich, MA, eventually to Ashford, being the first Knowlton settler there; Robert was the son of Thomas and Margery Goodhue Knowlton; Thomas was the son of John (#5) and Deborah [Grant?] Knowlton; and John was the son of John (#2) and Marjery Wilson Knowlton, early residents of Ipswich, MA.  Much of what is on the Internet about these people is false.  So far, through y-dna testing, we have proved John (2) and William (3) Knowlton not to be brothers through their father.  Anything beyond them, about their parents, etc., is pure hearsay so far, so do not depend on the Knowlton history for that.  I see you have Miles' wife, Mary Twedell, as marrying William Tucker first, so that fits with Stocking's account.  I am related to your Knowlton line, however it connects to you.  Elizabeth W.
