Notes

  • We get the full first name of W E Padgett in the 1870 Census, where he is listed as William, although the middle initial there looks like C instead of E.  In the Padgett line of Arkansas County, the name William, or Willey, and the initials W E are repeated through the generations.

David Holden provides several details of members of the Padgett and McSwain lineages.  He gives the full name of W E as William Ensley, and birth date as 3 January 1865.

While in 1900, William and his family are not shown in any incorporated part of Lamar Township, in 1910, they are reported in the town of Plainview, living on East Border Road.  In 1910 and 1920, William's trade is photography.

The child reported as Lewis O in 1900 is now reported as Oliver, which indicates that his name is Lewis Oliver.  Bonnie was a son in 1900, but now reported as a daughter.   This is the correct report, according to Bonnie's granddaughter Peggy Mayo Norman.

The birth state of Theodocia's father has changed from South Carolina to North Carolina to match her mother.  Ages change also.  Note that William's age is 10 years greater, but Theodocia has gained from age 29 to age 45, a gain of 15 years!  Oliver has gained only 9 years even though his birthday is supposed to have been in February.

Here William E is now reported as a photographer.  They must still own their farm. since their son Eugene E sis still reported as a Farm Laborer as in 1900.  you will note that their son Lewis Oliver is also reported as a Farm Laborer.

Note also that Eugene E is reported as married for one year, yet there is no wife in this household.  On page 6A of the same census in Yell County, we find Eugene is enumerated again 3 days later with his wife Lula.  They are also in Plainview town, living on Balloon Road.  The occupation of Eugene here is consistent with that under his father's household, but here, Eugene is reported as a Farmer (not just a Farm Laborer), even though he is living in town.

Notice that the number of years William and Theodocia have been married do not match in the two censuses.  The 1910 census was taken in April, and reports that they have been married 23 years.  Yet the 1900 census was taken in June, and said they were married 12 years.  It should have been either 9 or 10 more years in 1910, but it is 11 years greater since the 1900 census, even though it is not quite 10 calendar years later.
