  • The 1880 census names Leander Levi J.  He is reproted as age 1, matching Leander's birth informaiton from his grave dates, born 28 Dec 1878.  But other sources report him as Leander Jackson.

    The extensive family detail on Leander's memorial on Find a Grave reports that Leander was the son of Dr James Isaac Philpot (mother unnamed).  This James Isaac Philpot was the son of Jesse Robert Philpot and Jemima Deason, and was born in Georgia or Tennessee, according to various reports and records.  Int he 1880 census  for Polk County, Arkansas, a child matching Leander is reported as Levi J, age 1.  His father 25 years old, and thus born about 1855.  In the census his mother's name is Susan T.  Genealogies ( have seen do not have her maiden name.

    Note that there is another James Isaac Philpot, was born in about 1864, the son of Joseph W Philpot and Mary Bennett.

    LEANDER JACKSON "Lee" PHILPOT of 604 West Twenty-second, Ada,Oklahoma, was born December 25, 1878 in Polk County, Arkansas and died at the age of 80 on February 3, 1958 at Ada,Oklahoma. He was interred in Rosedale Cemetery. Pall bearers were; Clyde Meeks, Clive Robertson, Shed Blanchard, Lee Parker, Henry Maxwell, and P.A. Allen. Leander's description from his September 12, 1918 World War I Draft Registration Card was; medium build, blue eyes, brown hair.

    Leander was the s/o Dr. James Isaac Philpot [mother not named] and brother of;
    Eveline V., L.C., Viola Mae, Dollie A., Robert Francis, Nellie Esther and Lona Mae Philpot.

    Leander came to Oklahoma in 1901 from Polk County, Arkansas and had lived in and around Ada since. Lee married in 1901 his first wife IDA MAY BASLEY born in Caddo, Indian Territory in 1884.

    His third wife was LEONA S. THARP. He was living at 604 W 22nd Street in Ada, Oklahoma at the time of his death. Leander was survived by his wife LEONA S. THARP* of Texico, New Mexico, 4 daughters, 3 sons, 4 sisters, 18 grand children and 19 great grand children.

    (*Obituary from Ada Evening News March 29, 1970 states that LEONA S. PHILPOT died at age 87 at Ada Nursing Home. She was born in Limestone, Texas July 16, 1882
    d/o Daniel D. and Mary Jane (Hall) Tharp. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
    She was survived by 4 grand children, Jerry Allen of Ada, Oklahoma, Freddie Kenneth Allen, U.S. Navy based at San Diego, Reba Hazday and Nina Sue Stephens both of Ada.)
