Notes

  • I find it odd that one source shows members of this family associated with York County, South Carolina, while one child of this family, Isaac, is shown as born in Camden in Yorkshire, England.  There is no explanation or information about why the mother would have been in England at the time of birth of this one child.

It is of further interest that a later generation even refers to Camden, in York District (County), South Carolina..  I wonder if this researcher confused Camden, York County in South Carolina with the Camden in Yorkshire, England.  It seems odd that no comment at all is included.  I am following a couple of other sources to show York District/County, South Carolina as the birth place.  I know this is the area in which many of the Mullinax family lived, and where John and Sarah originally settled.  Censuses show Isaac's birth was in South Carolina.

    BJ Girardeau reports:
"Bought 100 acres of land 5-23-1813 [23 May 1813] in Grover [Lincoln County] NC; 150 acres of land 1823 in Grover, NC; 83 acres of land 1825 in Grover, NC; attended Antioch Baptist Church in SC.  Ordained deacon 12-4-1830 [4 December 1830]. ... Shows on two censuses as a physician as well as a farmer."

Dorothy Mullinnix reports that Isaac C Mullinax moved with all his other children except Bryson to Gilmer County, Georgia.  She finds him there in the 1850 census with the occupation of Doctor.  He would have been 89 at that time.  Dorothy does mention Sarah's age as 87 in that census.  She reports on records of Isaac's presence there:

"Isaac and his family, except Brison, moved to Gilmer Co GA buying land as early as Sept 3, 1838.  He continued to buy land until at least Sept. 1850 all in Dist 12, Section 2 and it consisted of approximately 1000 acres. In 1844 he began distributing land to his children."

Isaac Stephens appears to be the son of Emmalissa Mullinax and her husband Benjamin Stephens.  His age, though, does not match with his mother's death date as reported in some family sources.  The date of death reported by some is 28 November 1851.  At the very youngest, if Emmalissa died in childbirth with Isaac, he would be already 8 years plus, with his 9th birthday coming up a few weeks after the census.  I cannot specifically identify the West children, but they appear to be the children of Isaac and Rachel's daughter Sarah.  I don't know why any of Sarah's children would be in her parents' home, and I don't know how a 1 month old, and even a 1 year old, could be easily taken care of by a 67-year-old grandmother on an ongoing basis.
