Notes

  • The Hamrick Data Pages (page 75) give the following information on Elijah Hamrick and his wife and family:

    McSwain, Rebecca Elizabeth (~1835 - )
    b. Est 1835 in Rutherford, NC
    father: McSwain, Louis Hobson(1814 - 1867)
    mother: Hamrick, Mary(1816 - 1906)
    spouse: Hamrick, Elijah (1834 - 1863)
    ----------child: Hamrick, Mary (*1864 - )
    ----------child: Hamrick, Samuel (*1864 - )
    --  http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hamrick/wga75.html

In the 1860 census, we find Elijah and his wife Rebecca E living next door to her parents, Louis (Lewis) and Mary McSwain.  They have one daughter, 1 years old, which indicates they married about 1858.

1860 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 14 August, page 72, Hse/Fam #512
    Elijah Hamrick 26 M Farmer NC  [b abt 1834]
    Rebecca E Hamrick 23 F NC [b abt 1837]
    Sarah A Hamrick 1 F NC [b abt 1859]

I note that the Hamrick Data Pages do not even record this child.  Two other daughters are mentioned in the 1910 census, where Rebecca is reported as a widow.  See Notes for Rebecca E McSwain.

A gravestone in the McSwain Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina, appears to be that of this Elijah Hamrick:
    "Hamrick, Elijah 29y, 1m, 8d January 18, 1863 CSA"
    --  W. D. Floyd Transcription, http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/cleveland/cemeteries/mcswain.txt

From this information, the birth year of this Elijah Hamrick would be 1834.  Working from the 18th of January back, for the months and days given here in the age information, it looks like Elijah was born about the 10th or 11th of December 1833.  This matches his approximate birth year we get from the age of 26 in the 1860 census, and age 17 in 1850.

This grave information also tells us that Elijah was killed in the American Civil War, serving for the Confederate States of America.
