In 1896, Essie's grandmather Emily Meece applied for Choctawcitizenship when the Dawes Commission was trying to create acitizenship roll for the Nations.

    Dawes Commission Index, 1896
    Case #67
    Emily Quaid
    Choctaw Tribe

Emily's application was denied.  In 1896, and again in 1901, Essie'sfather Thomas, Emily's son, applied for citizenship in the ChoctawNation, along with several of his children.  This application was alsorejected.  The primary reason was probably that no blood quantum foreither Emily or her children or Thomas' children was known.
