Notes

  • The Greenes are associated with a town called Norton.  Some genealogies report that various Greenes are born in Norton, Northumberland, and others Norton in Southern Northhamptonshire.  I have not been able to locate a town of Norton in Northumberland.

The Northamptonshire Norton is located in Daventry District of Northamptonshire in the English Midlands, while Northumberland is a northern border area.  The full name of the town is Greene's Norton, or Greens Norton, since it has been Greene property and country since the 1300s.  Thomas' son Thomas is interestingly reported as born in Norton, Oxfordshire, which may be a simple coincidence, or may be a confusion of the town of Chipping Norton in western Oxfordshire with Greene's Norton.

"In medieval times, the village was known a simply 'Norton' and was a royal domain of Edward the Confessor and later William the Conqueror. In the 14th century the whole village was sold to Sir Henry Greene for a total of 20 shillings hence the name Greene's Norton, which today is reduced to just Greens Norton."
