Notes

  • Birth of Neil Yates is thought to have been in Mountain View.  It isknown that his parents were living in Mt. View in early years.  In1900 he is reported as 4 years old, even though his birthday was Oct1896, and thus he has not yet had his 4th birthday.

At the time of Neil's birth, Mountain View had not been established. The place was called Oakdale, and was a tent city in the formerArapaho and Cheyenne Reservation, now part of Oklahoma Territory, across the river and about two miles north of the current city ofMountain View.

"The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) extendeda line from Chickasha to the northern part of the Kiowa, Comanche andApache Reservation in 1899. It terminated about two miles from anexisting tent city called Oakdale, consisting of a store and postoffice on the former Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation. ... SomeOakdale residents obtained land for a new townsite. Platted in May1899 by the El Reno Development Company, the nearby settlement, withthe Wichita Mountains looming on the south and west, was calledMountain View. The Oakdale post office was renamed Mountain View onOctober 9, 1900."

My father, Orville Lee Jenkins, was born in Mountain View, and told mestories about growing up with the Indians in the area, and playing andhunting with them.
    --  Orville Boyd Jenkins

Consistent with the above encyclopedia description, we see thereported residence of Neil's parents in the 1900 Oklahoma Territory isUnion township of Washita County.  They had not yet moved to MountainView south of the Washita River.

In the 1910 census, we find them in the new town of Mountain View, innorthern Kiowa County, in the new State of Oklahoma.  In 1910, Neil isliving at home with his parents, at age 13, in Mt View, Kiowa County,Oklahoma.  The family lives on 7th street.  Neil is reported as a BootBlack (Shoe Shine Boy) in a barber shop.  His father William is amanger of a department store.

Family information reported by Harold Christian indicates the weddingwas in Marlow, but no family member had the date of the marriage.  Thelast two names are hard to read, due to write-overs, and the wide-nibpen used by the enumerator.  Family sources have the name of the lastchild as Glen.  Ancestry transcribes the child before Glen as Betty, with Beatrice as an alternative.  I think her real name might havebeen Betty Jo, as she is listed in the 1940 census.  I find this nameon all family references and photos.

I found a family photo of a man and a woman among my father's photosdescribed on the back as O'Neill and Betty, kneeling in front of aChristmas tree with the gifts.  This would confirm Betty (Jo) as thesister of O'Neil (also spelled as Oneil or Oneal and variously infamily sources).  The 1940 census listing also confirms thisrelationship, with Betty Jo still in the household as a daughter, andOneill as a son, with his wife Dora and children.

In 1940, the whole family group are reported as having lived in Gray(spelled Grey in the census) County, Texas in 1935.  This is whereBetty Jo was born.  Among Jennie Jenkins' photos I found a babyportrait made by a Pampa, Texas, studio, with no name or date, thatappears to be Betty Jo at less than one year old.  (Jennie was MaryNettie Yates' stepmother.  )From the records available, they were notin Texas very long.  They were in Caddo County, Oklahoma, in 1930, andthey were in Oklahoma City at least by the time of the 1938 OklahomaCity directory.

Note that Glen is missing from the 1940 census.  He should have beenabout 12 in this census.  I have not found death information, but themost likely thing is that he died before 1940, perhaps while they werein Texas.  Perhaps that is what precipitated their moving off theTexas farm and into the City.  I have found no photos or references toGlen in his grandmother Jenkins' collection.
