- Joseph Samples was the second husband of Laura Jane Strange, who was first married to James France in Cocke County, Tennessee. It appears that Laura and Joseph also married in Tennessee, then moved at some point to North Carolina.
In 1920, I found the person who appears to be Joseph in Cocke County, Tennessee. This connects with Laura, since she and her first husband James French liked in Cocke County, the next country from where she grew up in Jefferson County. This means Laura and Joseph married after the 1920 census, then moved to North Carolina, where we find them in the 1930 census.

I cannot figure out Rubel, since his father is single in 1920, yet Rubel was both in 1915 and here is reported as Joseph's son. One possiblity is that this is James France's son, whom, Joseph has adopted after marriage to Laura Strange France. We now know form the 1930 census that Joseph was also previously married (first married at age 20), perhaps Rubel is the son of his first wife, and is living with other family after the death of his mother.
They were living in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina, when Joseph died in 1964.
