A genealogy or two tells us that Rachel is Rachel McSwain, daughter of Neill and Katherine McSwain.  Neill appears to be in a different line of McSwains, from Virginia.  The Puckett genealogy below, where I found Rachel McSwain's family, does not have a father for Neill.

    Rachel McSwain
Birth 30 May 1840 in Robeson, North Carolina
Death Jan 1888 in Ware, Georgia
    Father Neill McSwain
Birth 1794 in Robeson, North Carolina
    Death 1860 in Montgomery, Georgia
    Mother Katherine McSwain
Birth 1793 in Robenson, North Carolina
    Death 1860 in Montgomery, Georgia
Marriage to John H Padgett 26 Aug 1858 - Age 18 North Carolina

But this genealogy is suspicious, as she has the birth of Rachel in 1830 in Robeson County, North Carolina, even though she attaches the correct 1860 census above.  The census record shows Rachel was only 20 years old in 1860.  This genealogy also has some other anomalies.  Other than this 1860 census, this genealogy provides no documentation.

Our Rachel is also mixed in some genealogies with another Rachel who married John McDaniel in Ware County, Georgia.  The above genealogy also has John McDaniel as a husband of Rachel, but the dates overlapped (actually enveloped) the dates for John Padgett.  The hodgepodge does not represent our Rachel's family and details.

Another Rachel in the records that would fit is the daughter of Hugh Kerr McSwain.  Hugh Kerr was the son of James McSwain, son of William Dvid McSwain Jr.  This Rachel is reported as 11 years in the 1850 census, matching the 1860 census record for the wife of John H Padgett.

It seems likely this would be the correct family, since they live in the area and have other connections and intermarriage with the other McSwain line and related clans in Cleveland County.  This is the only family I have found with a Rachel of the right age, and details fit exactly.

In 1870, Rachel is alone at home with her two daughters, in a second family in the same household with her widowed father.  Her father's second wife Catherine Davis has died, since there are no children in the home that were previously and subsequently with Hugh.  They may be found distributed among nearby neighbors, but when entering the 1870 information after initially finding this situation (24 May 2013) I had not yet searched for them.  There is an unidentified 16-year-old Hannah L McSwain keeping house for Hugh.
