A genealogy or two tells us that Rachel is Rachel McSwain, daughter ofNeill and Katherine McSwain.  Neill appears to be in a different lineof McSwains, from Virginia.  The Puckett genealogy below, where Ifound Rachel McSwain's family, does not have a father for Neill.

    Rachel McSwain
Birth 30 May 1840 in Robeson, North Carolina
Death Jan 1888 in Ware, Georgia
    Father:
    Neill McSwain
Birth 1794 in Robeson, North Carolina
    Death 1860 in Montgomery, Georgia
    Mother:
    Katherine McSwain
Birth 1793 in Robenson, North Carolina
    Death 1860 in Montgomery, Georgia
Marriage to John H Padgett 26 Aug 1858 - Age: 18 North Carolina
    --  Puckett Family,http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1903282/person/6025724370

But this genealogy is suspicious, as she has the birth of Rachel in1830 in Robeson County, North Carolina, even though she attaches thecorrect 1860 census above.  The census record shows Rachel was only 20years old in 1860.  This genealogy also has some other anomalies.Other than this 1860 census, this genealogy provides no documentation.

Our Rachel is also mixed with another Rachel who married John McDanielin Ware County, Georgia.  The above genealogy also has John McDanielas a husband of Rachel, but the dates overlapped (actually enveloped)the dates for John Padgett.  The hodgepodge does not represent ourRachel's family and details.

Another Rachel in the records that would fit is the daughter of HughKerr McSwain, also from a different line of McSwains from the dominantclan in Cleveland County.  Hugh Kerr came from a Baltimore line ofMcSwains.  This Rachel is reports as 11 years in the 1850 census, matching the 1860 census record for the wife of John H Padgett.

It seems likely this would be the correct family, since they live inthe area and have other connections and intermarriage with the otherMcSwain line and related clans in Cleveland County.  This is the onlyfamily I have found with a Rachel of the right age, and details fitexactly.

In 1870, Rachel is alone at home with her two daughters, in a secondfamily in the same household with her widowed father.  Her father'ssecond wife Catherine Davis has died, since there are no children inthe home that were previously and subsequently with Hugh.  They may befound distributed among nearby neighbors, but when entering the 1870information after initially finding this situation (24 May 2013) I hadnot yet searched for them.  There is an unidentified 16-year-oldHannah L McSwain keeping house for Hugh.
