Birth Aug. 18, 1752 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
    Death May 5, 1823 USA

John is the son of Joseph Barnett and Elizabeth Graham Barnett. He married Mary McEwen on 29 Apr 1784. They had a daughter Eleanor on 25 May 1788 and a son Joseph on 22 Nov 1789, per the Old Hanover Church Register of Births. A "John Barnett" was assessed taxes in the amount of 1 lb, 15 shillings and 3 pence for a 1797 fund to repair the Old Hanover Church cemetery wall. A wall still surrounds the cemetery to this day and has gone through many repairs since then. (Rev. Thomas H. Robinson's Early History of Old Hanover Church, Dauphin Co., PA, 1878, published by the Historical Society of Dauphin County, 1878, various pages) In 1785, this area in Lancaster Co., PA, became Dauphin Co.

Maj. John Barnett is listed on the 1993 SAR Veterans of the Revolutionary War plaque at the gate entrance.

Commemorative BiographicalEncyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania : Containing Sketches of Prominent and Representative, 1896, page 186, says he died 12 May 1823. Gravestone says 5 May instead

An early Barnet to this area is Robert Barnet, in Lancaster Co. PA warrant #166, dated 9 Jun 1738 in Hanover Twp., surveyed 200 acres on C23, p 63 and patented on 7 Jun 1822 to Christian Hunsicker on H20, p 231 for 267 acres.

According the William Henry Egle's book, Notes and Queries, Vol. 2, 1891, page 253, his gravestone at Old Hanover Churchyard says:

    JOHN BARNETT,
    Born
    August 18, 1752
    Died
    May 5th, 1823.
    (Agrees with marker photo)
