James Herman Wommack
Herm went to work at a very early age. He was working for the railroad laying track across Cass and Morris counties when he and Punk met and married after a short courtship. They lived as sharecroppers for many years until settling down in Cass County, in the community of Dalton, where they lived until their death in 1993. Herm and Ethel rarely spent time apart throughout their 65 years together.
Ethel died in Dallas, TX, following heart surgery on November 13, 1993. Herm was left alone for the first time in a very long time. At his wife's graveside he was overheard to say, "Walk slow Ole Woman. I'll catch up before you get there."
Two weeks later, Herm fell while getting dressed for his sister Leona's funeral and broke his hip. He developed pneumonia as a complication and died just 22 days after his beloved "Ole Woman."
