Several genealogies have Ivanhoe's full name as Ivanhoe Sylvester Gay. One has linked to an 1857 Minnesota state census of his family, where he is reported under the middle name as Sylvester, age 8 (born about 1849). This census also reports Sylvester as born in Illinois, while the 1880 census, which was the first record found for Ivanhoe, reports he was born in Minnesota.

The census reports Ivanhoe as age 28, which would make his birth about 1852. But he was reported in the 1857 Minnesota census as 8 years old, which would make birth about 1849. Seven years older than the 1880 age allows. The 1860 Federal Census in Minnesota reports Ivanhoe as 12 years old, or born about 1848.
