Thomas volunteered for service in the Civil War, and served the Confederate States in the 55th Georgia Regiment for the Civil War. On his pension application he reported he enlisted on 9 June 1862, but enlistment records show it was 12 May 1862. The date of 9 June may be the date when he was actually assigned to his regiment.  Sources are the Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865 and Confederate Pension Records, from the digital library of Ancestry.com.

The Civil War profile above does not report that he was a prisoner of war for almost two years.

In this list we also find Thomas' brother James, who died only two and a half months after he enlisted.  Also in the list is a William J Green, their nephew, the nephew of their brother Tyree.  William died in January 1865, while his brother Thomas was released at the end of the war.

The identity of the other Greens in this regiment list are not known.  I suspect that the Benton A Green was actually Thomas Bention.  Note that all these Green surnamed individuals joined the army on the same day.  I suspect that there was a confusion over the name Thomas Bention, and the middle name got entered as another erosn.  This list notes that there is no further record on that name.
