Hale R Gregory went by the unusual nickname of States Rights. So much so that even some official records refer to him as S R Gregory, rather than his actual name or initials. This is his name on his son's and his wife's death certificates. His memorial on Find a Grave reports this as his nickname.
The marriage report in this enumeration is confusing, reporting Hale as married but reporting Annie as his wife, but single, then again married 5 years, instead of 2 as for Hale. Her record also reports that she has not borne any children. But his son William Marvin Gregory's death certificate reported William's parents as S R Gregory and Anna West.
One history reports Hale's wife as Annie Crump, with the children named in the 1900 census as her children. Genealogies I have seen have only one wife for Hale. The report of marriage 12 years before 1900 would match the oldest child reported in 1900, Thompson, which seems to be Thomas. The only boy reported in the Wilkes History was William Thomas Gregory, born 25 February 1892. The 1900 census reports "Thompson" as 11 years of age.

The pattern of two wives seems to clarify the reports of names and births of children, but the Wilkes History reports the death date of Annie Crump as 14 February 1925. That is the birth date on the burial marker for Annie West Gregory.
